From Crispy Chicken Nuggets to Fried Chicken Dirty Rice Plate, the sheer variety of fried chicken at Bad Bird is impressive. (Read: Food Review: Bad Bird’s Umami Fried Chicken)
While you may think that Bad Bird is just a chicken-focused spot, some of the best bites, sides, and non-chicken dishes can be found in this unsuspecting restaurant. From the slightly sweet grilled Bacon-cut Short Ribs, to the sinfully good Pork Belly, and savoury golden fried Cornbread (Hush Puppies), here are 5 of the best dishes you’re overlooking:
Grilled Pork Belly – Although it’s not as tender as I had hoped, each thick and juicy piece is mouth-wateringly flavorful. The Chimichurri and Hot Steak sauces give just the right notes to remind you it’s dinner time. The portion was big enough for sharing although you may regret it later. 🙂
Bacon-cut Short Ribs – You really cant go wrong with the perfectly-grilled Bacon-cut Short Ribs. Each bite has a delicate balance of smoky and sweet, while the slices of apple on the side help temper the intensity from the bacon fat. If you’re feeling bold, add a kick with a dollop of their house-made Mustard BBQ sauce.
Now, move aside entrees. These, in my opinion, are the 3 best small plates and appetizers/bites to accompany your meal.
Scallion Pancake – The best Scallion Pancakes in Manila? No. The best savoury, crispy, salty (in a good way), Scallion Pancakes served from a restaurant that specializes in Chicken? Oh, HELL YES!
Tamago Cup – Think, Chinese Steamed Egg Custard. It’s not fancy, but it’s melt-in-your-mouth delicious, light-tasting, and with a silky smooth texture. Win. Win.
Bad Bird also offers a new take on cornbread. Their version, called Hush Puppies, are small round-shaped deep fried cornbread tossed in Honey Black Pepper and served with scallions on top. It’s a little sweet and a little spicy and why didn’t someone think of this combo sooner?
A lot of restaurants make a serious claim for having “The Best…” of something on the menu but only few places truly hit the brief. Thankfully, Bad Bird is one of these few places.
So, if you’re on the lookout for some serious fried chicken, or if grilled meats are more your thing, well that’s okay too, at Bad Bird, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Being able to serve up dishes that are far from an afterthought is an incredibly powerful thing for a restaurant to harness — and Bad Bird does not seem like it will be letting up on its grip any time soon.
