Dorissimo Pastries is a quaint little bakery located on Maginhawa Street. The shop was established in October 2014 and was founded by Dorris Monsanto and is currently being co-managed by her daughter, Jasmin Monsanto. With her passion for baking ablaze, Dorris came up with recipes that will satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth without letting the sugar intake get out of hand.
Just like most pastry shops, Dorissimo offers a variety of baked goodies such as cupcakes, cakes, breads, muffins, and cookies. They are known for their Choco Caramel Cake but the pastry shop also prides itself on their Brown Brazo de Mercedes.
The Brown Brazo is a Meringue Cake but made healthier because Dorissimo uses Coconut Sugar which was proven to have a low-glycemic index. Also, Coco Sugar contains magnesium, iron, zinc, and potassium which are all essential for regulating the body’s water content as well as many heart, nerve, and muscle functions. This cake may seem rather simple but it’s actually pretty tasty.
I also sampled the Mainebow Cake–a festive six-layer Rainbow cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. The cake got its name from local celebrity, Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza, who had the opportunity to bake this cake in Dorissimo’s commissary where the owner herself, churns out cakes and intricate pastries–all a sight to behold. Honestly, I thought the cake itself was a little dense and I still find it a bit too sweet. I was hoping a more buttery-rich, smooth with a slight tang from the cream cheese, frosting.
Overall, I’m glad Dorissimo is around. I appreciate that they actually have some healthy options on the menu and it’s great knowing these recipes were created not just to appease finicky eaters and calorie-counters but because the owners truly care about their customers’ wellness. I encourage you to visit them where you’re in the area.
